Loss Control

Introduction

The BWNFA Business Insurance Program emphasizes loss control and claims management as a means of obtaining lower cost insurance. Insurance carriers analyze franchisees’ loss history and price insurance premiums accordingly.

BWNFA professional loss control personnel work with franchisees throughout the country to counsel and train them on how to reduce losses and manage claims effectively. Loss control seminars and restaurant inspections are also an integral part of the program.

Reducing Frequency and Severity of Losses
Franchisees can reduce the cost of insurance by reducing the number and the severity of the claims that occur at restaurants. Loss experience greatly affects the premiums paid.

SLIP & FALLS
The majority, both in number and severity, of restaurant worker’s compensation and general liability claims are slip and fall cases inside and outside the restaurant.

Please have each of your restaurants inspected both inside and out to reduce the risk of slip and falls.

Review the following at a minimum:

Are several wet-floor signs always used during wet weather and during floor cleaning?
Are floors cleaned on a regular basis?
Are you mopping (other than spills) during non-peak hours?
Are bathrooms properly maintained and are wet-floor caution signs displayed?
Are proper absorbent mats used at the drink stations/doors?
Are mats used at the walk in freezer, cooler, sinks and fryers?
Are employees required to wear slip resistant shoes? Is the parking lot properly maintained with no oil spots or potholes, are curbs and other elevation painted yellow?
Are the parking lots and sidewalks inspected regularly and trash and debris removed promptly?
Are the sidewalks in good condition?
Is the lighting inside and outside adequate?
Are spills checked for and cleaned promptly as instructed?
Are the dining room, restrooms and kitchen free of trip hazards?
Is snow and ice removal done quickly and regularly and is salting done regularly?

Please have employees conduct a self-assessment on a regular basis. Remember, by reducing the number and the severity of the claims at restaurants, franchisees can substantially reduce premium.
